Organic Recycling
California State Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), requires the reduction of organic was disposed of landfills. Organic waste is food scraps and food-soiled paper from kitchen and food operation, and yard waste such as garden and landscrapes waste and wood waste.
In order to comply with SB 1383, and to make Fountain Valley a more sustainable and thriving place for everyone, the city of Fountain Valley is please to introduce a new Organic Waste Recycling program for all city residents.
What are the Benefits?
Organic waste will be composted and turned into nutrient rich fertilizer. The city will host an annual compost giveaway for Fountain Valley residents. Compost and other products from recycled organic wastes are valuable to farmers, schools, community gardeners and many others in the agriculture and landscape industry. These products return nutrients to the soil, conserve water, reduce run-off, and help plants grow. By recycling food and landscape waste, residents and business owners are contributing to a greener, healthier California.
Who Must Comply?
SB 1383 is unique in that it requires all residents and businesses to recycle organic materials. SB 1383 also requires certain businesses to donate excess edible food to food recovery organizations to assist people in need.

- ALL Commercial Businesses (Public and Private)
- Schools
- Government Entities
Residential Recycling
ORGANICS - NEW
Senate Bill 1383 now requires all California residents to recycle their kitchen organic waste, or food scraps, with their yard trimmings.
Organic waste includes all food scraps, including cooked meat, fish, poultry, bones, fruits, vegetables, bread, pasta, rice, and grains; food-soiled paper, such as pizza boxes, coffee filters, wet paper towels, and soiled napkins; and yard waste, including grass, leaves, small branches, plants, weeds, and garden trimmings.
Fountain Valley residents can now pick up a free kitchen pail for organics recycling, from City of Fountain Valley, located at 10200 Slater Ave, in Fountain Valley. The FREE kitchen pails will be available during regular business hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Recyclables

Commercial Recycling

Contamination
In accordance with state law, Republic Services staff will be conducting annual contamination monitoring reviews. Representatives, in clearly identified safety vests, will be in the community reviewing the contents of organic, recycle, trash carts and dumpsters. If contamination is found, a tag will be placed on the cart or dumpers identifying the incorrect items. Please note that these reviews are mandated by state law and will occur on an annual basis.
